Clem, select texture files in Unity, then in the import settings, override the settings for Android. Set the texture to use crunch compression if not done already, then set the resize to bilinear and the size to about half of what you currently have if it's not enough. You can also change the compression algorythm (use the same one as current but with bigger blocks size).
